The relevance of research for clinical practice

We have considered how definitions and theories of intimate partner aggression should account for the research findings. The evidence presented so far suggests that (a) men and women may perpetrate or be victims of partner aggression; (b) patterns of aggression vary, encompassing solely male-perpetrated, solely woman-perpetrated, and mutually perpetrated episodes; (c) a wide variety of factors at different levels increase the likelihood of intimate partner aggression; and (d) perpetrators are a heterogeneous group that differ in risk level. We now turn to the implications for what effective assessment and treatment of perpetrators might look like. First, we consider how the current approaches fit the evidence before highlighting areas for change to ensure a scientist–practitioner approach can be achieved.
